Defeat at the Glass Bowl Fins

A couple last things.

When Coach Clawson was asked in his presser about whether he could fix the kicking game by next week, he did not react the way I might have reacted.  He did say something interesting, which was that BG might have more kickers on scholarship than any other D1 school.  He was asked how many, and he said "three," and then he looked down and said "four, we have four kickers on scholarship."  I would have guessed two, but then if you figure Stein, Tate and Farinella you have your 3. Either Matt Oczypok is on scholarship or he is counting Schmeidebusch.

Coach said they are pretty good in practice but it doesn't translate to games.  He used the word "frustrating" which it is.

Don't know what you do next week.  Maybe a rugby player?

Lost in the talk about the first half "3 play theory" was a very slow start by the offense.  BG went 3 and out on the first 3 possessions and 5 and out on the 4th and an INT on the 5th.  BG had 18 yards on the first 9 plays.  On a couple third downs, Schilz checked down into a covered pattern well short of the "line to make" and either he's checking down too quickly or our WRs were not winning battles to get open.  Either way, BG's offense had a very slow first five possessions and contributed as much to the first half hole as the "3 plays" did.

BG did run the ball very well.  Samuel had 112 yards on 16 carries.  I believe he is continuing to get better every week.  Jamel Martin had 18 yards on 4 carries and Pettigrew struggled though he did convert two short yardage plays.  As a team, BG averaged 4.7 yards per carry.

Schilz had an OK completion percentage (67%) but it was only 9 yards per reception, so some of the routes were safe.  He was victimized by a couple drops--one by a wide open Burbrink in space--but he also took a sack late the in the 2nd where he just had to get rid of the ball.  Clawson was not asked about his QB play, but I'd say the offensive production (and with it the QB) remains good in spots and not as good in spots.

Chris Jones had another great game.  Yes, he took a personal foul.  He also had 2 sacks, a forced fumble, and half a tackle for loss.  He's an absolute stud in there.

Dwayne Woods had 10 tackles and 2 for loss in the first game where I have noticed him being a real difference maker.

If I was an opponent, I'd run those screen plays until we showed we could stop them.

BG had a very difficult game next week before the schedule softens.  Still, they are likely to come home 1-3 for homecoming.  What we got last night was a comparison with one of the better teams in the conference, and we did learn one thing.  On this day, we aren't there.
