Presser and Depth Chart

It's game week and BG has run off its first presser.  Coach had a few interesting things to say, don't get used to it.

Ha.  I kid.

  • First, he said that you can't recruit to your system anymore.  BG has changed the offense and defense to adapt to personnel and he gave the coaches credit for helping to make the adjustments.  We will do some things completely different.
  • He also credited Coach Nosal for doing a good job on the offensive line, which is "better."  I'll look at the published depth chart in a minute, but the new guys we brought in are not on the top line.
  • The team knows who the QB is, but we aren't announcing it publicly. There's no advantage to it.
  • He did concede that we could have gone to the portal year 3, which he stridently opposed at the time.
  • Liberty would be a top-flight MAC team and we will need to play our best football.
  • We were banged up early...getting healthy.  He mentioned the Oline as being banged up specifically.

Now, to the depth chart.  One caveat is that we have sometimes listed injured players in the #1 slot even if we don't expect them to play.  Based on our normal approach, I would consider this the way the lineup would shake out right now, under the best circumstances.

I was most interested in the OLine.  Here are the starters, LT-RT.

Stewart, Fatukasi, Padgett, Warner and Wollschlager.

Each of these guys was with us last year.  Stewart and Fatukasi split time at LT, and now Fatukasi has moved to LG to replace Jalen Grant.  Alex Padgett, who played sparingly last year and the year before--and not as a center--was BG's top run blocker when he did play, according to PFF.  Warner and Wollschlager are both right back where they were last year.

Behind them are:

Pabst, Zimmerly, Burns or Deyo, Dunbar II, and Bethea.

Pabst was a DL who changed positions.  Zimmerly is from Perrysburg. Jake Burns transferred two years ago from UC and Deyo transferred this year from Iowa State.  Dunbar II played all over the line for 126 snaps last year and transferred two years ago from Jackson State.  Bethea transferred this year from Arizona State.

Of the 11 players on our OLine depth chart, three of them came to BG originally.

WRs are Ibrahim and Hillaire, backed up by Osborne and Tillman, from Grand Valley.  Stewart, Patterson and Keith are RBs, with Bench and Fannin at TE.

Of the 23 players on the two-deep, 9 started at BG.

On the defense, BG lists 12 positions and 29 players, 9 of them transfers.  None of this year's transfers are listed as starting and some are not even on the two-deep.  Note, also that in today's defensive world, these positions are all more hybrid than they ever were before and alignments can use widely varying numbers of linemen and backs.

Overall, I would say that the defense has guys who have played and played decently but lacks a bunch of standout players. If standouts emerge from the pack, the defense has a shot to be decent.

A few highlights.

  • Davon Ferguson is listed as nickel back.  With that, I suspect BG plays a 3-3-5 as its base.  If Ferguson stays healthy, it will be huge for BG and he is probably our best defensive player.  That's a key element to BG competing.
  • The d-backfield is experienced.
  • Ali Saad, a transfer from Minnesota, is listed as or-starter at DE after not playing much in the past.
  • Demetrius Hardamon moved from d-line to RLB.  He was a solid pass rusher last year and will be tested this year to get pressure without Karl Brooks drawing attention away.
  • Joseph Sipp, Jr, is also listed as starting WLB and has not played much.

At special teams, Sir is back punting and the Kicking is Anaya OR Sauder.  That last element is worrisome.

Football Preview

So, the game is afoot.  We are six days from the opener.

I'll start with a global view.  Coach Loeffler is in his 5th year.  He came here with a plan and we were asked to be patient.  We went through the ugly part, and last year we got to at least a respectable part.  All along, we were told that in Year 5 we would be ready to compete for a championship.

It's here.  Coach has this year and two more years on his deal.  I still think he could be gone at the end of this year, depending on how things go.

So, about that.  First, as always, the schedule is brutal. This is part of our lot in life.  We start @Liberty, a quality mid-major picked 2nd in Conference USA.  They played UT tough in the bowl game, but then again BG beat UT, so we come out ahead there.  Anyway, it's not an easy game.

Then, we play our FCS opponent.  Every MAC team plays 1 of these and at least this time we appear to have at least gotten one we can beat.  EIU is picked 10th in the OVC.

Then we head to the Big House.  BG has 2 FBS opponents--as do 7 other MAC opponents.  WMU plays 3.  UB, OU, EMU and UT only plays 1.

So, we have UM, OU (At the Doyt) and Georgia Tech in consecutive weeks, followed by @Miami and @UB.  Not easy.

On the other hand, our crossover games include Ball State and WMU, the two bottom teams in the MAC West.

So, here is the thing.  BG could certainly be improved and have it not show in the record.  Last year, BG was 6-7 and 5-3 in the MAC with a -55 point differential in conference play.  The point differential was last in the MAC...we won close games and often lost by lopsided scores.  Very unusual and more likely to see regression than progression.

In fact, I think you could argue that we would have to improve to get to 6-7 and 5-3 again.

Even if we did, is that enough to continue on our current path? Do we really need a 6 or 7 year rebuild?

That is assuming we don't backtrack, of course.

By year 5, we were told we would be back.  Implied in that is that other teams would see us on the schedule and think uh-oh.  Not the other way around.

I would love for this to succeed.  But, there's only so much patience anyone should be expected to have.  We've gone from awful to average.  The next jump is tougher.

I went back and looked at the last 10 MAC seasons, eliminating the COVID year.  There are 20 teams in the MAC title game in those 10 years.  11 of them were in the top 4 in the MAC (conference only) scoring offense and scoring defense.  7 of them were top 4 in one or the other.  And 2 were outside the top 4 in both--one of them the 2015 BG team.

So, can our units get into the Top 4?

Let us start with the offense, which was #11 in scoring offense.  That was the result of a #11 running game, #10 on 3rd down conversation, last in red zone and 18 offensive turnovers.  BG was 4th in passing efficiency.  They were 6th in yards per play, which is not bad, but did not convert to points based on being one-dimensional and unable to convert on 3rd down and in the red zone.  BG had 4 red zone turnovers.  OU and CMU had 2 and no other team had more than 1 and most of those teams had more red zone trips than we did.  BG turned it over on 16% of their red zone trips.  OU on 4%.

Anyway, what are the prospects for turning this around? BG would need to go from 20 PPG to 29 to be in the top 4.

Coach has said that BG has to run the ball (and "we will, period, full stop."). I think anyone would agree with that.  A consistent running game improves each part of our offense.  Terion Stewart will help.  He is clearly better than anyone else we had last year. We have depth and versatility in Keith, but after that a couple guys who were about the MAC average.

But the RBs are only part of the story.  The key will be on the offensive line, a position group that has plagued our program since before Loeffler was here. The Falcons were 8th in pass blocking and 11th in run blocking last year, based on PFF.  In other words, the line went from awful to below average.  If the Falcons are going to run the ball, they will need significantly improved run blocking--especially since their two best run blockers (Grant and Robinson) are gone.

We will see how the depth chart looks tomorrow.  Transfers were brought in, and one DL was moved to the other side of the ball.  Young players who return can also develop.  But if BG is going to run the ball effectively, they need a significant upgrade on the OL.  Full stop.

The last offensive area to talk about is QB.  I think the WRs are solid and even among the best in the MAC.

So, after Matt McDonald struggled for a couple years with injuries and a lack of a supporting cast, he got a chance in his last year to show us what he could do, ranking #3 at QB according to PFF.

He is gone.  BG had a camp battle between Camden Orth, who played serviceably when McDonald was injured last year, and Conner Bazelak, a transfer from Indiana.  Bazelak has had good parts to his career--SEC Fr. of Year--and bad parts--losing the job at IU.  If he gets the job, which I expect, which Bazelak we see is going to have a big role in how strong the offense is.  Is it reasonable to expect more than we got out of McDonald last year?

That's the offense.  Poor last year and how much better this year?

On defense, BG was 8th and returns 5 starters--and loses its DC, who had seemed to do a nice job with the unit.

BG was 8th in scoring defense at 27 PPG. 2 PPG would get them to where 4th was last year.

BG was 7th in yards per play, 6th in yards per rush allowed and 9th in pass defense efficiency.  They were 3rd in sacks, last on 3rd down and 4th in the red zone.  All checks out pretty consistently.

BG lost Karl Brooks, Walter Haire, DJ Taylor, Chris Bacon, Jordan Anderson, Brandon Spires and Bryce Brand--included in that we 5 of the top tacklers.

To replace them, there are transfers on the DL and at LB and a JUCO at DB.  In addition, Davon Ferguson and Darren Anders both entered the portal and then returned to BG--significant for us.  Imagine if that list above included those two names as well.

Phil Steele ranks us 9th on the Dline, 7th at LB and 9th in the d-backfield.  I would certainly agree that LB is the defense's strength.  I'm hopeful the backfield ends up ranked better than this.  The biggest loss will be the QB pressure that changes everything.  It might be a lot harder to defend the pass without Karl Brooks on the D-line.  There are some P5 transfers on the Dline, but there's a lot to replace.

As for special teams, Sami Sir is back and was #7 in the MAC.  PK is a huge question mark.  Lawler graduated and BG was auditioning four guys at the scrimmage I saw.  Jackson Kleather was a HS star we recruited.

I think we will be good on the return game.

The Blade did a survey of BG fans, and people were mostly right in the middle on our program.  Understanding what had to happen but not sold on the idea that it would progress further.

In my view, we will need to be significantly better than last year to get where we need to be.  That has happened in the MAC.  You just have a time when lots of things that have been percolating finally come to a boil.

I hope it happens.  It's going to take a lot.  I don't think being a little better will be enough.  But I'd love to succeed with these coaches. What I fear is a very difficult decision this fall.

We could know something right away, I think.  Any improved record would probably include a road win against Liberty, where BG is a 10-point underdog.

Hang on: The Bewley Twins are at Chicago State

I have been informed that the Bewley Twins have come to Chicago State, with the potential to roust the independent school out of its normal bottom-dwelling record.

To be sure, when I was made aware of the Bewley Twins, I had no idea who they are.

Having looked into it, November 6 will be must-see viewing at the Stroh.

Matt and Ryan Bewley are twin brothers from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. They are 6'9" forwards and were the first high school juniors to sign with the Overtime Elite professional basketball league. They were both 5-star recruits. The brothers were ranked among the top 15 high school juniors in the country. They signed two-year, seven-figure contracts with Overtime Elite.

The Bewley twins last played prep ball in 2020-21 at West Oaks Academy in Orlando. They have competed in the Overtime Elite league for the last two seasons.

They are now headed to play college basketball at Chicago State.

Matt was ranked #2 overall in 247 Sports 2023 recruiting rankings, and #3 by ESPN and Rivals.

So this is a big deal.  Imagine, first, any of those sentences even five years ago.

It puts Chicago State on a new level, for sure.

Men's Basketball Schedule Announced

The basketball schedules were released today.  The big news (BIG!) is that the South Carolina women will be playing at the Stroh, an incredible get for the program and the university.  House will be packed.

The men's schedule has no such headline.  There are still 2 games to be determined...one as part of the Sun Belt Challenge and one...not.  Given that about half of the D1 teams have their schedules out, my guess is that the extra game will be non-D1.  But who knows.

Speaking of which...last year's Southern Utah team played 4 non D1 games, so even if BG ends up with 2, that's (to me) an acceptable number.  (UT plays none). The failure of EMU and CMU with their NAIA-laden schedules shows you cannot succeed playing that way.

Having said that, BG certainly has to have among the softer schedules in the conference, based on where teams were last year. (Not every team has released their non-conference schedule).  Note we have only 2 true road games out of conference.

In the world of the portal, it is harder to predict from one year to the next.  But, here is the BG schedule.  For reference, BG finished last year with a 286 kenpom.

Nov 6 Chicago State

293 last year.  Usually, the worst team in D1, and that's the best in 9 years

Nov 11 Arkansas State

This is the Sun Belt Challenge.  They finished 287 last year, have a new coach, Bryan Hodgson the former UB and Alabama assistant.  A lot of portal action, including LaQuill Hardnett, formerly of Buffalo.

Nov 14 @Oakland

Finished #272. Worst D1 season for Kampe. BG won last year.

Nov 17 Bellarmine

Finished #262, 3rd D1 season

Montreal

Nov 24 UNC Asheville

#148, in Dance, new coach

Nov 25 UMass Lowell

Good team. #134 last year. 26-8. Lost to Vermont in AEC final.

Nov 26 Dartmouth

#260. One of the teams with longer NCAA drought than BG

Dec 2 @Southern Indiana

#285. First D1 season. Won at Stroh.

Dec 16 Kansas City

#314. Has a nice habit of ruining UT's season.

Dec 19 Hampton

#351. BG beat them in Virginia

Dec 22 Siena Heights

NAIA. 8-20 last year.

Scrimmage Report

The scrimmage yesterday....a few thoughts...first, we were not allowed to video it...but I snuck in a camera.  The footage is below.

So, that ought to tell the story.

Anyway, here are a few things.

It seemed to me that the offense was much like last year.  We made some big plays--a couple runs, a couple double moves in single coverage, a kickoff return, a nice play from under the goalposts on a hard play fake--but I didn't get any sense that we were able to really sustain any drives.  There was a bad turnover and the 2-point drill was scary.  It seemed to me that the defense won their share of the plays, especially on the runs.

Some other observations.  Nate Pabst was getting reps at LT.  He was a DL last year and moved to the OL since then and is listed as the starting LT in Phil Steele, which probably came out of talks with Loeffler. (He had it Pabst, Fatuskai, Deyo, Warner, Wollschlager as BG replaces Grant and Robinson).

Having Terrion Stewart back will help a lot.  He is a difference maker.

We had open FG competition and they seemed to mostly miss them.  A bunch of the snaps were low.

The guys were engaged.  Two big fights broke out.

As has been noted elsewhere, Bryce DeFalco is injured and on crutches.  I did not see any other injuries.

It's hard to tell with a scrimmage.  Was it good offense?  Was it bad defense?  Vice versa.  It's hard to tell.  This team needs to be way more consistently effective to have a shot this year....all will be revealed soon.  The schedule will present little margin for error.

MAC and ESPN Protect Football Rivalries

Good news from the MAC on the issue of football rivalries.

Not the absolute best news, but good news.  As the FBS' last true geographic conference, and the most stable conference, the MAC has worked a deal to get some sanity to rivalry games.

I get it.  It would be better to have ALL of them in October on a Saturday.  But we will take what we can get.

So, starting next year, BG and UT will run one rotation on Saturday before running back into #maction.  We think.  Who knows what will exist three years from now...but that's the plan.

For my money, this is what will eventually be missed in college football.  If you destroy rivalries--I'm looking at you Bedlam, "Civil" War.  The ongoing storylines are part of our identity as fans...weaken that and you break a bond you might not re-forge.

Bryan Blair says as much in the story.

Anyway, a moment to be proud of the MAC--for that, and for being the last representation of what an athletic conference is supposed to be.

Pardon: The Sequel

BG has a '24 MBB verbal....which will be very popular in the Falcon Nation...Jaxon Pardon, the son of Falcon great Brandon Pardon.

I can hear the cheering now.

For review, Brandon Pardon was an Ohio Player of the Year in HS who transferred to BG and played 3 years (99-02), leading the MAC in assists twice and finished #3 in career assists behind David Greer and Antonio Daniels.

His son, Jaxon, is from Ft. Wayne, where he attends Carroll HS.  He scored 15 a game as a junior and was 1st team all-conference and honorable mention all-state.

Here is what he told the website Hidden Gems about BG....

Bowling Green: "The new coaching staff is amazing. They play with a style of play that is something I could fit into very well. The MAC is a great conference where any team can be great competition."

He's 6'4" and registers as a combo G.  BG was his only D1 offer.

Welcome home, Jaxon.

BG Lands TE Commit

The Falcons continue to add commits to the '24 class.

This young man is Caden Campbell. At 6'4" and 240 pounds, he is from De La Salle HS in Warren, MI. This verbal is from the DZone, but is not listed on Caden's twitter right now.

BG was his only FBS offer, though he also had offers from Saginaw Valley State and Tiffin.  He did not get much in the way of stats as a junior and my guess is he showed something at a camp this summer.

De La Salle is two-time defending DII champion in Michigan.  Other alumni include JP McCarthy, Steve Phillips and a host of professional athletes, plus an art director from Mad Magazine.

Welcome to the Falcons, Caden.
