For those of us who haven't been reading this (great) blog for years, I'd love to see a post on the what it means to be relevant in the mid major college football world.

I spend a lot of time telling my friends that while BG may not win a national title, they should be every bit as into BG football and getting the most out of Saturdays. Some of the points you make in this post are spot on.

Winning games, going to away games, going to bowl games and a big upset every now and then make BG football relevant and fun to follow and attend.

NEWSFLASH, the vast majority of teams in major conferences are out of any kind of national title hunt after one loss. If all one cares about are national titles, then only six or seven teams (those who might be strong enough to have a shot with one loss) will be relevant in any given year. Who wants to live in a college football world where only six teams matter?

He would automatically become the best player on the team. Watching him in high school he was the most explosive player at Northland. He can rebound and finish close to the basket. Not quite sure if he has a good jump shot. He was originally recruited by Sean Miller at Xavier. Miller went to Arizona but Weatherspoon didn't follow.

This is worth the try. It could be a very good idea, although a MAC Ohio team vs a MAC Michigan team might draw even larger. I'd expect Crew stadium to be sold out. It could flop, but you have to give BG credit for trying something out of the box.

This is like if Tulsa (non bcs team) played a conference game against SMU in Norman, Oklahoma the day before the Oklahoma State-Oklahoma. Its ridiculous to think any other school would entertain this idea. That weekend everyone in the columbus area will be focused on OSU/Michigan. There will be barely, if any, media coverage of a BG/Buffalo game. I'm interested to know what type of attendance the athletic department is expecting for this game. I say 15,000 and that's IF it's decent weather and BG is playing for a mac title or bowl bid.

I like the idea of playing in Columbus. Larger potential alumni fan base, nothing else for our fans (whose wives are enjoying black Friday) to do in Columbus - why not tailgate and watch the Falcons.

Do I wish it were a bigger team ? Sure but I love the non-conference schedule and I'll take a winnable game in the heart of Ohio.

(also I would imagine that a lot of our season ticket holders drive from Columbus or at lease from the South every week anyway -- they will come).

Normally you are spot on, but I must respectfully disagree on this one.

A lot of things can be cleared up after tomorrow, but after spending a nice, long conversation on the phone with the MAC a week ago, I found out that Division record is not a tiebreak unless it is a tie for the division title. So there are only two tiebreaks for teams not playing for a division title: 1) head-to-head; 2)Ranking teams and comparing results between tied teams starting from the top and working down. So your tiebreak scenarios are a little screwy because Division record is not used.

I had it wrong also until talking with the MAC.

He also has video of high school games on you tube I hope he gets his chance as a walk on.We need a quarter back like Northern or Western Michigan , they add another dimension to an offense.

Thanks for reading. Hopefully, no game in our own conference should be out of reach...that should almost never happen to a good program. BG did have some close calls again. I think we're on the right track, I'm just not sure what people are expecting.

The two dominant non-conference opponents are at least offset by two winnable non-conference games.

Regardless of the caliber, as a fan that has been to big away games a number of times since I graduated, I still really enjoy playing big time football schools and think that BG should continue to schedule them. We will pull a few out from time to time and they will pump the program...to lose to Florida costs BG nothing from a credibility standpoint (as long as it isn't by 50 points).

Once into the MAC season, I think that the Falcons can build on some of the improvements pointed out in your season run-down and gain a little in the experience department to pull more wins. We were so close on several occasions this year - particularly at the end of games (e.g. Toledo) and no game (in my humble opinion) in the MAC is out of reach.

Good stuff. Only correction I would make is in your first bullet point. Akron beat Mississippi State from the SEC so the MAC has two wins over BCS Conference schools. You list it correctly in your conference-by-conference breakdown, but missed it in your first bullet.
