Benchmark Report, Owl Edition

So, here we look at the Temple game based on some statistical benchmarks that are commonly used (by me).

First thing that jumps out are the passing numbers for Temple.  Counting sacks, they tried 17 passes.  They were sacked on four of them, which means just under 25% of the times they wanted to pass, they were sacked.  Even without any interceptions, that's not good.  Similarly, they only completed 42% of those 17 passing attempts and averaged only 2.6 yards each time they went back to pass, which would be a bad running number and is a dreadful passing number.

BG defended the kickoff well, too.  Note that Temple was held to very low conversions on third down, for a team that was converting at a high rate.  Also, which 5.3 yards per rush is good, it is less than Toledo ran for against us.

For BG....

First, it was great to run the ball 46% of the time.  We seem to need that to compete.

BG gave up more sacks (probably by 1) than you would like to see, but ran the ball pretty well, all things considered.

BG struggled passing the ball...just not as badly as Temple did.

BG's 4th down conversions actually gave them a higher conversion rate on 3-4 down than Temple had.

BG got good kickoff field position, as well.

Clawson Teleconference and depth chart review....

Coach Clawson did the MAC teleconference today.  Not too much news was made...

Coach Hazell of KSU made special comment on the energy on the BG sidelines, saying that the whole bench erupted when someone made a play.  Coach Clawson said he showed the same thing to our team.  He feels that while we don't have many seniors, they are leading the team unselfishly.

I never noticed anything like this, but when the team is erupting I usually am too.

Beyond that, it was a lot of coachspeak.  BG has to come out against Kent and play well, which is what good teams do week after week.

He also noted that Kent killed us last year, with many of the same guys.

As for the depth chart, all was pretty quiet there, too.  A few guys are "OR" where they weren't before and vice versa.  Nothing that would seem to impact rotation and overall snaps.

Quick Check In on Freddie Barnes

Just a quick check in up in Saskatchewan on Freddie Barnes, who was finally elevated from the 'riders practice roster to the main roster.  He didn't make a catch, but he did make a TD-saving tackle to prevent a pick-six.

From what you read, they are trying to work him into the offense.  Best of luck, Freddie.

Chris Jones MAC Defensive POTW

You can't run when someone grabs your ankle.

Chris Jones has been named the MAC East defensive POTW...

And as well he should be, with 3 sacks on Saturday.  (and 1 hurry).

It is his second time winning the award.

Jones is a junior, was 3rd team All-MAC this year, and has to be making a serious run for first or second team this year.  He was a Brandon recruit we hung onto in the coaching change.  He leads the MAC with 7 solo sacks.  No one else has more than 4.

Former and Future Opponent Land

Idaho (1-6)--Off.
Morgan State (4-3)  Off.
Wyoming (4-2)  Off
Miami (2-5) Beaten like a drum in the Glass Bowl.
WVU (5-2) Lost to Syracuse

WMU (4-4) Our loss in Kalamazoo is looking worse and worse everyday.   EMU beat the Broncos yesterday...holding the unstoppable Bronco offense to 10 points and 198 passing yards.  Meanwhile EMU ran for 205.

Toledo (5-3)  Thumped the Redhawks.
Kent--(1-6)  Off.
Northern (5-3)--Very, very tough battle in Buffalo.  Won 31-30 when Buffalo scored a TD and missed the extra point with :14.  We feel your paind.
Ohio (5-3)--Beat Akron.  As they should.
Buffalo (2-6) See above.
