Falcons land Indiana DE (Note: 1,000th post to this blog!).

6-3, 240 lb Kevin Alvarado

We apparently beat out Ball State for this one. (Credits to Flipper Via AZZ in tracking this one down.) He reportedly had contact from Big 10 schools, and was a second team all-state player.

Long snaps, too. Hey, looks like he could be a nice player.

E: KEVIN ALVARADO, East Chicago Central, te-rb-de-lb, 6-4, 235: A 3-year starter, Alvarado had 48 solos, 30 assists, 4 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries, returning 2 for TDs. He caught 28 passes for 449 yards (16.0) and 2 touchdowns and carried 16 times for 70 yards (4.3). Alvarado also long snaps and is being looked at by Division I colleges.

DE--Kevin Alvarado, 6'4, 240. Indiana. Second team all-state.

Bracket Busting Fun

Like the Bracket buster. It is a nice break from the conference season, and we get a decent home game in the deal---either this year or next.

This year, we play Morehead State on the road.

BG game notes say were beat then 79-11 on December 28, 1955, but we actually lost 111-79.

The Eagles are 10-11, 7-5 at home. They lost by 15 to South Alabama (a team we beat, barely), and CMU--a team we lost to.

Their coach looks like a Saturday Night Live character.

"At some point you've got to be self-motivated, have self-pride that you're just not going to get beat anymore," Dakich said.

Bad to worse. We lost to CMU, who was down two of its best players, including its second best scorer. Final 71-68, and we led by nine at the half. Just to keep the record going, that's six in a row, and 13 out of our last 14 MAC games. Given that a MAC season is 16 games, we're almost to the equivalent of a full season with only one win. Our last MAC win was more than a year ago.

The tale of woe goes on and on. It is becoming practically impossible to believe that we won't make a change, much as I might wish otherwise. We could easily finish 3-13 or 4-12 in the MAC. Or, we're right on the verge of turning it around...if we are, there are no visible signs of it.

Some notes:

  • We shot better than CMU and we out rebounded them. Yet, we lost. Why...
  • We committed 35 fouls. CMU shot 43 FTs. This game was only close because they missed 18 of them.
  • We also turned the ball over 24 times.
  • Martin only got 7 shots. Teams have figured that one out. He ended up with 18 points due to FTs.
  • Nate Miller 18 points and six boards. He will continue to be a very good player for this team in his career.
  • Odd, odd playing patterns continue. People who didn't play at all in the last game start this time.
  • We had a shot late, but kept turning the ball over.
  • Coach didn't show up for this post-game interview.

I hope our guys keep playing. I am worried that we might start to mail it in as it becomes clearer and clearer that we will reboot the system next season. If our AD is going to keep Dakich, he should say so now. Otherwise, I just see smaller crowds and bigger defeats.

We play Ball State on Wednesday. They aren't very good either, but there is no game we can count on winning at this point.

Offensive Review...yes Football

This one of those things I have been meaning to do for a long time....more or less since we jogged off the Glass Bowl turf. But, you know, the season ends in December, you're real busy for Christmas, and then the NFL playoffs start. So this is a good time--sure, there's hoops, but we're also in the worst six weeks of sports in the year. Except for the Super Bowl, we're just out of fresh dramas until March Madness starts. Then baseball starts, and away we go.

So, I wanted to review the offense first. Defense will come later, followed by special teams (no gaping please). Note that I printed the MAC stats out on New Year's Eve, so there's OU and WMU's bowl games are not included. So there.

Essentially, by any overall measures, this was our least productive offense in the Brandon/Meyer era (hereafter referred to as B/M). Even to a casual observer, that should not qualify as a surprise.

We scored 19.5 points per game. No other B/M team ever averaged less than 30. Now, MAC scoring was down this year...CMU led scoring with just under 30 ppg. I think, really, that the MAC itself was down--and that should be kept in context. This team performed worse against a worse conference than before. We were eighth in the MAC in scoring.

Ok, let's get a little deeper. I believe the single most important stat is yards per play. You can sometimes commit totally to running and look a little better than you really are, and vice versa with passing. But yards per play (and, of course, scoring) are in my opinion the key stats.

Our yards per play was 4.9. That was 6th in the MAC. Our glory years showed this average to be over 6. Only UM was close @ 5.1. We just didn't have the high octane offense we have had in the past.

And most of that comes from passing. Our spread offense, when working right, is a mix of passing and running. Sometimes we forget that you have to run in this offense, but this year, we saw what happens when you can't pass out of it--at key times, the opponents will shut you down.

We completed 56% of our passes, which was tied for 6th in our league. This is comparable to the % we had in UM2. The difference is that we only got that % by being extraordinarily careful. Our yards per passing attempt--an excellent proxy for how adventurous your passing attack is--was 5.8, ninth in the conference. In other words, in a very conservative offense we completed only 56% of our passes. Think more of the kind of numbers Bruce almighty got throwing bubble screens and short passes.

Anyway, our 28 passing attempts a game were typical of what we had under UM, but much lower than under GB1-3. (So much for critics who say we forgot our playbook).

We kept our sacks down--we were only sacked 20 times, which was third in the MAC. Again, though, that is modified by low attempts and short drops/quick releases.

We had 12 TD passes over 11 INT--the lowest ratio, by a lot, during the B/M era. The 11 INT's might look OK, but again, with 28 passes a game, they represent an INT on 3.2% of our passes, a number exceeded in B/M only by UM1.

Overall, we were eighth in the MAC in passing efficiency (based on the bizarre numerical formulas used in the NCAA).

Obviously, passing offense falls on the QB. Well, not so obvious, but it does. Falcon fans screamed in agony all year with the play of Anthony Turner who was in his first year as a starter. And he struggled. No one in football looks better than a backup QB, so fans had all kinds of ideas. True FR. Tyler Sheehan did get plugged in a couple times, but he was not really any better.

I continue to be an AT supporter. I think you will see him come around next season. If you want to see an encouraging sign, look at this stat line from the Toledo game.

Turner, Anthony 21-35-0. 3 Tds. 212 yards. 0 sacks. 6.08 yards per attempt.

If he can do that consistently--or even just a little better--we can score enough to win.

There is, however, a myth floating around the Falcon Nation that Turner is at the same point in his development as Josh Harris was. That, in fact, is not true. You can argue that they are similar QBs at this point. And, Harris was a change of pace QB for most of his (true) SO season, with Andy Sahm starting. But, by the end of the sophomore year, Harris had led supercharged efforts over Northwestern and Toledo and clearly established himself as a top flight QB. To compare the Harris who led BG to a dismantling of the Rockets in his second year in the program to an AT in the third year is just not right.

Before we leave the notion of passing, let us not forget the role of the receivers. No QB in the B/M era has had to work with such a shortage of talent as Turner did. Yes, Partridge is good and Barnes is skilled (but raw), but the rest of our receiving corps was poor this year. If we can improve at all there, it will help AT as well.

This year, lacking confidence in the passing attack, we focused on the run like no GB team has. Yes, we led the MAC in yards per game, but we also ran the ball more than any other team, even OU, and they played one more game than us, not even counting the bowl game. On the vital yards per rush, we were third in overall average @ 4.2.

Chris Bullock ran the ball effectively--4.8 yards per carry, though he seemed to run out of gas as the season came to an end. I hope he will be helped by the JUCO transfer Ransom. The expected starter--Dan Macon--who we redshirted mid-career, never seemed to get untracked (72 carrries, 5.4 average ??). In this offense, especially the way we ran it, the QB is an RB. Turner, in fact, was second on the team in carries and had 480 yards. This averaged to 3.4 per carry. He loses yards for sacks, but I think overall his running was workmanlike, but he wasn't the game breaking change of pace you expect from a running QB in this offense.

Some other things to look at:

We led the MAC in 3rd down conversions, at 40.9%. Even so, during UM2-GB2, we were above 45% each year. Still, I believe third down is football's make or break down, and we continued to make plays on that down. It is a credit to the playcalling.

4th down was another matter. People always talk about crazy Tommy Amstutz going for it on 4th all the time, but we actually went 33 times this year, and UT went 36, so Brandon is almost as crazy as Tommy. My guess is that we wanted to avoid, however possible, getting into a punting or field goal formation--you will see why during the review of the special teams. We made it 48.5% of the time--5th in the MAC. (higher than third down because it is usually shorter).

In the red zone, we scored 71% of the time, the lowest in the B/M era and 10th in the MAC. During the early years of the run, we were freaking deadly--I mean sick, ruthless--in the redzone. I think that average points per redzone trip is a better stat, because it doesn't treat a FG and TD the same. UM2 we were 5.38 per trip--are you shitting me? Now we are down to 4.03, a little higher because we only tried 9 FG's all season.

Finally, turnovers were not our issue. We lost 18 turnovers, and only Ball State lost fewer. So, at least being risk adverse accomplished one of its objectives.

I believe the running game will be back strong, with Bullock and Ransom. I hope the WRs are improved, with Partridge healthy and Barnes learning. And I hope the line can continue to play well under a new coach. And I hope AT turns into the player we think he can be. We simply are not going to win @ 19 points a game, especially with next year's schedule.

AZZ Rumor says that QB Nate Brown is headed our way--and we lose a reported verbal

Rumors on AZZ.com say that QB Nate Brown of PA will be coming to BG. He's from Harrisburg, and would appear to be a good guy to wear our uniform. Scout says he has 8 scholarship offers.

17. NATE BROWN, Harrisburg (Harrisburg) - One of the more undervalued prospects in the state, if not the entire northeast. Tough to be an unknown when you are the starting quarterback for the team that had perhaps the most talent in the state, but somehow Brown managed. A lot of that may be because he broke his wrist towards the end of his junior year and missed working out at a lot of summer camps. Qualifying issues are also a question mark. But on the field, he has nice 6’4” 210 pound size, a good arm, and much better than average athletic ability. He is also coached by excellent offensive mind George Chaump, who spent time coaching in the NFL. Butler says about him, “I like him a lot. Quarterback, linebacker, I don’t care. He is a player.” Right now he is getting MAC, low D-1, and D-2 offers, but a bigger program could get a steal with him if he qualifies.

Also, reports had indicated Kevyn Scott, a DB from Miami was coming here. This report from Miami indicates that he is now going to Syracuse.

Great Falcon Recruiting Story

How did we land Nick Torresso of Schaumberg, Illinois. Here's how..... (hint: be nice to the Moms in all walks of life)

“The family environment there was real nice,” Torresso said. “My mom went down there and they were legitimately nice to her.”

WMU Beats Falcons By 9

That's a little worse than it really was. Game was tied with 3:36 left, and we didn't trail until the second half. Still, that's five in a row, and 12 out of our last 13 MAC games.

Erik Marschall seemed to be back, and working well inside with Nate Miller. Erik had 17 in the first half, but then WMU locked him down in the second half, and he ended up fouling out. Martin only had 12, and no threes until late in the second half.

This was a winnable game, if not an easy game. This team might be improving, but there isn't any bottom line evidence of it. We're not getting blown out like last year, yet it still hangs in front of us....12 of our last 13 conference games.

We play @ Central on Saturday. They're really bad, and that's a very winnable game. How long has it been, you ask, since we won a road game in the conference? January 26, 2006, @ Kent. One year from Friday.

On the post game, Coach was composed, though he said that Miller and Marschall had come to play--and intimated that Samarco had not really shown up. If we could get Miller and Marschall working the inside and kicking out to Samarco, I don't see why we couldn't at least score enough to compete.

Vital signs. WMU shot 43%--we should be able to win with that. We only made 13 TOs, but had 24 fouls. WMU hit 23 of 28 fts for the night.

1,445 people in AA tonight to watch a team that is now 10-9.

Quick Injury Report

From a story in the Sentinel, Ryne Hamblet is the second Falcon (along with Eric Marschall) to be fighting injury problems. This is too bad--we need his experience and guard play, and it appears he will not be healthy for the remainder of the season.

Hamblet is hampered by two bad ankles and a bad shoulder and has not scored in double figures the last six games. He was 1-of-9 from the field against Kent State.

“He’s not comfortable in a (shoulder) brace,” Dakich said about Hamblet. “He’s going to have to be operated on, probably the day the season is over.”

Falcons Receive Visit from Atlanta WR/LB

He was Team MVP, and is also looking at WMU and Akron. We apparently want him to play LB, according to this report.

Falcons-Kent Recap

The Falcons fell to 1-4, and last place in the MAC East with a one point loss @ Kent. That makes two tight road losses in a row, but four losses in a row, too (we're 10-8). It is very hard to tell if we are making progress.

I have already noted Coach's multiple personalities during the post game show. We played a hard game, and I don't think this game, in isolation, is a cause for worry. But there's the four straight losses, the 11 out of the last 12 conference games.

Though we trailed by at least 11 at one point, with :44 left we were three down with the ball, huddling in a time out. As is far too typical for our team, we came out of the huddle and didn't get a shot--any shot--much less a decent shot. We were out of timeouts, so we didn't get a second chance. They trapped Martin at the top of the key and eventually stole it from him. From there, it was pretty much over.

Some notes:

  • Martin rebounded big time from the Miami game. 26 points, 11-19 from the field and he only took 4 treys (hitting 3).
  • Nate Miller is a stud. Plain and simple. 20 points, 14 boards, and Germaine Fitch like steals and disruption on the defensive end.
  • Eric Marschall seems to be back. He played 33 minutes. He didn't produce much (4 points, 4 boards, 5 fouls). Maybe still getting his game back, maybe still working out how he and Nate can compliment one another inside.
  • Player rotation continues to be a mystery. I just don't understand. Not saying anything is wrong with it--Coach knows more and sees more than I do. We only played six guys more than 19 minutes, a tighter rotation than normal. Darryl Clements played 26 minutes, where he has hardly played at all recently. Otis Polk and Guerin, who were on the floor for the "old school" play against Miami, hardly saw any time at all. I just don't see the rhyme or reason.
  • Kent shot 48% against us. We will not beat too many teams when that happens.
  • We won the rebounding 36-25, and only gave up 4 offensive boards, which is a nice improvement.
  • We had 18 turnovers and 21 fouls, both a little higher than optimal.

Ok, so we continue on, waiting to see if this is the kind of team that can be even a little dangerous in March. My goals for this team would be a .500 MAC season and two wins in Cleveland. Obviously, we have a ways to go.

A start would be to beat WMU on Wednesday at AA. Then we play @ CMU and Ball State at home. So, if we can string 3 in a row, we're 4-4 in the MAC and maybe have something to build on.

The WMU game is no gimmee, but I'm not sure they are the team they used to be. Their 3-2 MAC record is against the weak west. They lost to NIU, and their wins are against BSU, EMU and CMU--ALL AT HOME. They had a nice win against Virginia Tech in the pre-season, and played tough teams pretty well. Their freshmen phenom David Kool (MI Mr. Basketball) scored 26 against EMU yesterday.

Falcons Drop Game to Kent 62-61

More analysis coming when stats are ready. Coach Dakich set new records for multiple personalities during the post game show, coming on to initially praise his team for carrying over the second half effort in Oxford this week. Then, Todd Walker tried to praise the team for rebounding better, and Coach said that he hadn't heard anything Todd said, and that the team lost and there was no excuse, and then he carried on in that vein for a while.

We're 1-4 in the MAC, but more winnable games are ahead. If this team is really improving, let's hope for a home win on Wednesday.

Falcon Football Recruits

We're just a couple of weeks away from signing day. Recruiting is a funny business. Good information is hard to come by. Big schools have some media services tracking information and actually talking to kids about what they are thinking, but we don't have that in the MAC. Our coaching staff (smartly) does a good job of keeping it quiet. Still, through the auspices of the Internets, (ie, players telling their home papers they are verballing, etc), we generally know who these guys are before they actually get here.

Cribbed from a post on AZZ.com, here is the state of play today, for what it is worth.

WR-Adrian Hodges-Jacksonville (Fla.) First Coast 6-foot-2, 190 (Called a "Southern Sleeper of the Week in USA Today")
DT-Preston Burrell East Grand Rapids 6-foot-5 and 265 (#42 on Detroit News Michigan Blue Chip List)
LB/SS-Glen Stanley-Vanguard (Fla). 6'2, 210. Note: his cousin is playing here. If the team was lost, he'd be going somewhere else. More on him here.
OL-Josh Dodge...6'-3" 275 (FL) More on him here.
DB-Kevyn Scott...6'-0" 175 St. Thomas (FL). He was third team all-Broward County. 2 INTS last season.

I wouldn't be blogging if I didn't engage is some unsubstantiated speculation. So, let me start.

First, recruiting makes people greedy. We want good players and lots of them. That list is only 14 players...which is not an especially big class. We didn't have a big senior class, but some guys have transferred or left school. In football, you never really know how many scholarships the team has to give. But, I for one hope there are some more out there, because with four JUCO players, we're looking at having 10 seniors five years down the road.

Second, we're obviously recruiting Florida heavily. 5 of the 10 high school recruits are from Florida. I am, by the way, fine with this. Others want to see BG recruit Ohio. I could care less. The great Meyer/Brandon years were highlighted by players from around the country, especially Florida. (There are three MI kids and 2 OH kids).

Overall, this appears to be a decent class. I like the JUCO players, and a couple of the skill players, and it is hard to tell with lineman. Recruiting, of course, is a guessing game. They have to come here, get coached, etc. We'll keep this group updated as more info comes in.

Falcon Nation Shocked....Studrawa to coach OLine at LSU.

In a stunning piece of news, our own Greg Studrawa is leaving to coach the line @ LSU. Greg is a BG grad, and had turned down other positions (namely, Central Florida), and you can't help but be happy for him. This is a much better opportunity, and I'm happy for him.

It is shocking news, anyway.

He got the OC job when Urban left and Brandon was promoted, and the offense had, objectively, a mixed record in his tenure. Certainly, as he called plays during the J5 and O4 bowl years, we were moving the ball at will, but with a deeply talented offensive set of offensive players. Starting with Omar's last year and then this year, the offense struggled and became increasingly risk adverse. Falcon fans felt he didn't trust AT, and, in fact, from time to time it was clear why that was.

My favorite Stud moment was at OU during Omar's first season as a starter. We were in the visitor's section, and down below the Falcons were heading into the locker room. Stud was all over Rob Warren, yelling at him that he was getting beat on "every stinking play." Funny thing was that here was this massive man and his voice was high and very shrill and he sounded like a 98 pound girl. Very funny.

My saddest moment was walking by the coach's booth after the epic OT game at the Doyt between BG and UT. He was alone, and he just looked so sad. Probably how I looked, too.

Best of luck to Stud. He's a good line coach, and I wish him all the best. I hope he likes Baton Rouge.

As for what's next, my uninformed speculation is that they will promote Mick McCall to coach QB and be OC, and hire a line coach. In some senses, you would love to go out and get some spread offense prodigy, but McCall is considered a pretty good coach and our tactic has clearly been to promote from within.

Time will tell.

UPDATE: Time HAS told. Blade reports McCall to be promoted.

Coach Dakich explains Samarco not playing

In The Blade, Coach says it wasn't a punishment, he was just trying to shake things up, and he feels like it worked. Emphasis added.

Here is the kind of quote that makes you root for Dakich to, somehow, get an extension. \

"I just want to get back to these guys playing like they can play," Dakich said. "I knew there'd be some ups and downs, I knew this would be a tough early stretch.

"I know my situation, I'm supposed to care about wins and losses, but I just want to see guys play really well.

"Even after the game [Wednesday], it wasn't like that sick feeling when we lose. At least guys played. We've just got to build on it."

Falcons Drop Another MAC game...Dakich With Curious Post-game comments

BG lost 66-60 to Miami today, and I'll have more comments coming later. Storyline is BG was down 14 at the half, benched Samarco for nearly the whole second half, and "won" the second half 38-30.

On the postgame show, Coach had some very odd statements to make---paraphrasing here.

"This is the first time in two years we've played Bowling Green basketball, they way we used to play in my first four-year years here. Guys moving, working the ball, in the passing lanes. I'm not happy we lost, but its the first time we've really played our basketball in two seasons. Obviously, it's my fault we didn't. I just took all the guys out from last year who just want to jack shots up and we finally played the kind of basketball we used to play."

Words very close to those. Interesting indeed. I don't know what to say. A couple weeks ago I was all this way:

So, you no doubt read my comments before the game...I was worried. We still don't know how good we are, but we know a little more, and there is reason for hope. You're only as good as your last game, but I am beginning to think this team might really be able to stay with teams in the MAC.

Remember, this was played without Marschall and Hamblet. I just think we might finally be turning the corner.

So, the barometer swings back. Just to be sure we know what we are talking about, we have now lost 10 out of our last 11 games in the MAC. Kent on the road Saturday does not look pretty, either. Coach Dakich may have seen us turn the corner tonight, or at least find the corner. I hope he's right.

UPDATE: Here's the quote from The Blade.

"It's the first time in two years that our team's played like my teams from 2000, 2002, '99," BGSU coach Dan Dakich said. "That's obviously my fault that we don't play like that more. We didn't jack shots, we didn't quick-shoot, we threw the ball inside, we got after it on defense.

OT: How much better would things be if Gregg Brandon earnestly said something like "it's my fault our guys came out and played poorly today."

Back Home, Falcons Suck Wind against Zips

Not much to say, since I didn't hear it or see it. Here's a couple of troubling passages from the new Sentinel Tribune online edition.

This is, of course, what we feared when we hit the MAC season. We now go to Miami and Kent on the road, two very tough games. A split will be a major accomplishment.

That wasn’t the case Sunday afternoon in Anderson Arena when Akron’s coaching staff decided to spread the floor against Bowling Green for the second half. The move was made to open up dribble penetration for the Zips, who are quicker and more athletic than the Falcons.

The strategy worked as Akron broke open a close game with an 18-1 run over a six-minute span in the second half on the way to a convincing 83-62 victory.
The Falcons proved to be resilient in the first half, coming back to trail 36-35 at the break. During a two-minute stretch early in the game the Falcons turned the ball over on six straight possessions, mainly due to an inability to break Akron’s pressure. The Zips went from two down to eight up during those two minutes.

Blogbreak

We're out of town, no posts until at least Tuesday next week. Go Falcons, beat Akron!

Bad news, good news for Falcons on Thursday

Bad news first, the hoopsters were absolutely destroyed, stem to stern, on the Convo in Athens. We got 4-23 in the first half, never got the game within 13 points, and took the tube. 1-1 in the MAC. Post-game, coach said we did nothing right....and I have no reason to doubt him.

On the football front, we signed four JUCO players who can start next Fall.

I really like the looks of two players who played in Texas at Trinity JC. One is top flight RB Eric Ransom...check this out.

...unanimous All-Conference selection in 2005 as well as a first-team All-American...led the nation in rushing in 2005 with 1,536 yards on 256 carries...recorded 2,356 yards on 413 rushes for his career...ranked third nationally and first in the state of Texas among all Junior College Running Backs by rivals.com
Sounds great, right? Nice get. He provides some depth with Chris Bullock, and probably points to Dan Macon riding the bench----or, moving back to defense.

I also like kicker Sinisa Vrvilo, also from Trinity. Check this out--sounds like the real deal.

...was a two-time first team all-conference selection...named first team All-American...helped the Cardinals to a SWJCFC conference and Pilgrim's Pride Bowl championships in 2005 when he was the nation's second-rated JC kicker hitting on 37 of 38 PATs and 14 FG's with a career-long of 55

We also signed Jerrson Davis, a 6'2, 210, Linebacker from Coffeyville CC. This is a real need position, and he has three years eligibility. His bio doesn't list many accomplishments at the JUCO level, so I can only assume we've seen something to suggest he can play at this level.

Finally, Punter Nick Iovinelli came from Harper College, where he averaged 36.6 yards per kick. No way to know if this means that Rojas has left school or if he's here for depth.

Best wishes to Coach.

Detailing the Thriller

Took awhile, but I did want to detail the Falcon thriller from Sunday. It was a great day to be a Falcon fan, and I only wish more people than 1,200 could be in AA to see this kind of exciting college basketball.

Things were great in the first half as BG went up 16 (34-18) with 6:18 left to play in the first half. Then, however, Buffalo went on a 48-21 run over the next 18 minutes to take an 11 point lead. Frankly, there is no other word except to say "dreadful" to describe that run.

So, there's 8:02 left at that point, with Buffalo up 66-55. With 4:48 left, Buffalo was still up 11, following a bullshit intentional foul on Martin Samarco led to a 4 point play. So, Bulls up 70-59.

BG then preceded to win the next 12 points in the game. Martin had the next 6, Nate Miller hit a fastbreak layup off a steal, and Dusan hit 2 FTs, and we're down 1. Then, we get another steal, and Sims nails a layup and we lead (1). Unfortunately, Eric Moore hit a 3 and Buffalo was up 2 again with :38 left.

Cue the crazy ending. BG calls time. Dribbles to half court, farts around up top with the ball and calls timeout again with :26 left. BG again tries to set up a shot, but nothing is open--Buffalo is quick and defends really well. Samarco is stuck in the right corner, and flings it cross court to the other corner where Guerin saves it by bouncing it off a defender--very heads up play.

Still, we're inbounding in the corner. 3 on the shot clock, 5 in the game (about). Samarco gets the pass. Pinned in the corner. Nowhere to go with the ball, defender draped all over him. He steps back, for a falling away jumper from the fourth row of the stands and hits absolutely nothing but f***ing net. The man can just plain shoot. Shot falls as the buzzer sounds (Todd Walker audio here).

The shot clock buzzer....not the game buzzer.

Pandemonium breaks out. Maybe a little too much. Fans on the floor, players off the bench. Buffalo, rather than calling a timeout, chucks the ball the length of the court. Luckily, it goes off the end line, because we had no one back, and its a layup if the guy catches it.

What ensued was a long official meeting reminisecnt of the 1972 Olympics. They decided we would inbound under Buffalo's basket. We get fouled before we inbound the ball, and Nate Miller misses both free throws. So, Buffalo still only needs a hoop. For once, we covered the inbound, and they ended up just chucking the ball into the middle of the court, and that was the game.

What a day. Martin Samarco ended up with 43 points, hitting 7 of 12 from the 3 point line. He was only the third player in Falcon history to ever hit 40 in Anderson Arena.

He was helped by Nate Miller with 13 points and five boards, and Brian Guerin with 10 points and 10 assists (this kid is a hell of a find. Moten didn't have his shot tonight, and Guerin just slid right in).

A couple other guys made some big contributions. Otis Polk had a huge blocked shot late that helped turn things around, and Brandon Bland was the only player we had who slowed down Eric Moore, who scored 35 points on 11-16 from behind the arc. His defense helped us set up that 12-0 run near the end. As Coach said, he was the only guy who got that we had to stay with Clark.

On the key indicators, Buffalo only shot about 43% for the game, made 18 turnovers and 18 fouls. BG shot 54%, with 13 turnovers, and 19 fouls.

Go Gators!!

BCS CHAMPIONS!!

Urban Meyer, six seasons after being named at BG is now the BCS Champion Coach.

A day of pride for the Falcon Nation.
We had something special, even for a short time.

On AZZ.com today, former FalconWR Kurt Gerling posted some memories of Coach Meyer. Here's what he said...important words for today.

I like to get on this website a few times a week and read what all of you have to say. There has only been a few things that have prompted me to post a remark or two, this happens to be one of them.

I played for Urban my senior year and I can say without a doubt that he is the best thing that has happened to BG in the past 15 years. Without him BG could still be where it was when I attended the school for my first 4 years.

Was I upset when he decided to leave? Absolutely. It was obviously the best move for him, his family, and his coaching staff. He has since become a top five coach in America and would do anything for a former player. He keeps in contact with me to this day and is always reminiscing about our days at Bowling Green. For anyone on this link to think that he doesn't care about BG or the people and friends here made here are crazy. We should be proud that he made his start at our school and that we all had a chance to see him coach.

If somone told you that if you left bowling green you would coach for the national championship in 4 years, all while having your family set for LIFE, having coach Gonzales's kids SET, Mullen SET, Drayton SET, Hevesy SET...would you go? KNowing that you left a program in 10 times better shape than it was when you arrived? Is there even a question? When he left the staff that stayed all got promotions, Beckman went to coach for a National Championship. Do you think that he would have gotten an opportunity to coach at O state with another 2-9 season under Blackney? Everyone benefitted from coach Meyer being here. SEBO center? I saw those plans drwan up on HIS desk my senior year.

I know that I am very proud to have met him and played for him, you all should be proud that he got his start at OUR school.

With all that said, we should all pull for that guy, because like it or not he put BG back on the college football map.
Right On. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't been here.

Falcons Win #10 over Buffalo

I'll have a more complete game analysis tomorrow. For tonight, it was simply a thrilling day to be at AA. With Marschall and Hamblett out, Martin Samarco stepped up for 43, only the third Falcon ever to score 40 in AA. The final shot, from the third row, under pressure, with the shot clock ticking down, amazing. Then, 2.8 seconds that reminded me of the 1972 Olympics before the victory was final.

Obviously, I had some concerns on where our team really was. I feel a little better tonight. Add Hamblet and Marschall into that mix, and we are competitive in the MAC, I hope. OU coming up on Thursday.

Game On!

The Falcons start MAC play today--our real proving ground--as the Buffalo Bulls come to town. Buffalo has a mixed body of work for the season...they won on the road @ Canisuis, they beat the University of Miami, they won @Temple, and came within 3 of Pitt. On the other hand, they lost at home to Delaware State and lost by 30 to Evansville. Still, they're 8-5 against a stronger schedule than we played.

One positive indicator. Teams don't tend to shoot well against us, and Buffalo is the second worst shooting team in the MAC.

Plus, word is that Ryne Hamblett will be suspended and Eric Marschall isn't ready to play yet.

This is a good test for our team--one we need before we go to OU on Thursday. OU beat Akron last night at the Convo.

I don't mean to be a pessimist. My biggest fear is that we're coming down to earth quickly. I hope, however, that we see something different, and beat Buffalo today. It is absolutely not outside the realm of our ability.

Great Hoops Post In the Kalamazoo Gazette

There's a lot of talking going on in MAC circles. It mostly centers around basketball, but you don't get too far in any conversation about MAC sports without ending up in a discussion about the MAC's costly commitment to football.

This is all well detailed in a great article in the KZoo Gazette by Graham Couch. It is a must read for MAC fans.

Exhibit One: MAC is basketball is average at best, today. While statements like this are always debatable, it is important to remember that the MAC used to be known as a basketball conference. Today, our RPI is 13th among D1 conferences, and well behind the Missouri Valley, which has had seven tourney bids the last two years.

Couch's article goes on to detail how the Missouri Valley does it....among the reasons are:

  • Better facilities
  • Better paid coaches
  • Guarantees to get home games
but these are all parts of the same answer (like when my in-laws list their 10 favorite things about living in Florida, and they're all variations of "the weather is better.") In this case, the answer is, because they don't have D I-A football.

Others have written on this. The New York Times has written a great magazine story on "How Football Can Kill a College," about The University of South Florida.

Simply put, our ability to compete in basketball (and hockey, though that is another conversation) is severely hampered by the investment you must make to play big-time football. How many (how many, I ask you), non-BCS colleges sustain successful (on a national scale) programs in football and basketball. Much less hockey.

I'm not saying we shouldn't have I-A football. I'm not saying we should drop hockey. But in today's fiscal environment, we have to ask if we can compete at the level we want in all three revenue sports based on our ability to finance athletic programs. The article is thought provoking, interesting, and a little frightening for MAC fans. Some excepts are below:

Altman earns $700,000 per season -- and he's not even The Valley's highest paid coach. That honor goes to Wichita State's Mark Turgeon at $750,000.

By comparison, the MAC's best-compensated coach is Kent State's Jim Christian at $250,000 annually....

The disparity in facilities is significant, too. MAC venues such as Central Michigan's Rose Arena, Toledo's Savage Hall, Akron's Rhodes Arena, Kent State's Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center, and Bowling Green's Anderson Arena are far below the standard for The Valley....

So, too, is scheduling. Based on membership standards set by the league office, Valley schools used to be penalized $100,000 of their share of the NCAA money for playing a non-Division I team, a policy that was only discontinued when its programs seemed to get the message, Elgin said. They are also rewarded financially for finishing with an RPI ranking in the top 149, an incentive that encourages solid scheduling and the setting aside of guaranteed money for home games....

Boise State....Football's Gonzaga

Now that Boise State is the new darling of the national media, the Gonzaga of the Pigskin, let's watch for a couple things....

  • They play, like, no more Saturday games next year.
  • ESPN buys them out of their game with us for more $$.
Yes, that's right. I highly doubt you will see the Broncos make their return trip to the Doyt next year. I think they are going to milk their moment in the sun.

Gonzaga Coming to Bowling Green

No...not to play hoops. Rather, our new DB coach is Adam Gonzaga, replacing Dennis Springer, who went to Western Kentucky. He must have been high on the radar screen to get hired so quickly. He's coached at Navy, and most recently at Northview (MI), a good I-AA program where he was D-coordinator.

Hard to say what you're getting, but I like the idea that we seemed to have our eye on him, and I like the idea he was a top level I-AA coach. Good coaches are good coaches, it doesn't matter at what level.

Lionel Sullivan dismissed from team

The Blade has the story today. Lionel Sullivan will be leaving the program.

See comments last month when it became pretty clear that this was the outcome we could expect.

Did Urban Learn Something

If you follow this blog, you know how strong my feelings are about what Urban Meyer pulled when he left Bowling Green. My lengthy post on "Coming to terms with Urban Meyer" can be seen here.

So Nick Saban pulls an Urban Liar manuever...not going to Alabama....going to Alabama. ESPN asked Urban what he thought of all this, and here is what he said.

"I learned my lesson at Bowling Green," Meyer said. "I was offered a job and I turned it down. I was all set. They went like this and stuck a microphone in my face and said, 'Are you going to take the job?' And I said, 'No. I'm not going to take the job.' And then a few days later I got the phone call from Utah. So everyone was all [ticked] and all that. What's the best way to handle it? Now that you're older? It's 'No comment.' That's always the best way to handle it. Because I heard coach Saban say there's no way he's going to be the coach at Alabama."

Yes, everybody was all ticked and all that. Even so, this is as close as Meyer will get to admitting he f***ed that one up.

Dakich Reportedly Suspends Hamblet

According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Coach Dakich called the Coach of UWGB and told him that Ryne Hamblet would be suspended for throwing a punch during the game last week. I heard the incident on the radio, but Todd Walker was careful in describing it because I don't think he actually saw it. The upshot was that the UWGB player was knocked into the scorer's table, left the game with concussion symptoms, and Hamblet was called for an intentional foul.

The player has a history of concussions.

Coach Dakich reportedly said he had watched film and determined that Ryne had thrown a deliberate punch and would be suspended.

If he's right that the punch was deliberate--and I can only assume he's carefully reviewed the film--than this is one reason to like having Dakich @ BG.

Note in the article here the response of the UWGB coach to getting the phone call.
