Falcons Nab DE Commit

Joe Shimko III is BG's latest football commit.  He's a DE who is from Martin County, FL.  He had four D1 offers...from Akron, OU, FIU and BG.  He is 6'4" and 250, which is pretty good for a rising senior.

They play spring football in Florida and they had a jamboree (I think where they play half-games against different opponents) and he had himself a time:

  • 2 quarters against Plantation
  • 2 quarters against Stranahan
  • 6’4 250lbs DE/TE class of 2024
  • 2 sacks
  • 1 strip
  • 1 fumble recovery
  • 1 snap at TE (touchdown block)
  • 6 QB hurries
I'm guessing he came to BG's attention from this performance, he had an OV here and then he committed shortly afterward.

Beyond that, there is not a lot of information, which is not unusual for guys who have only played their junior year of HS.

Martin County, FL is on the Atlantic Coast of FL.  It is also the home of Jupiter Island, the richest zip code in the US, as well as  Naked Lady Ranch Airport, a housing development where you fly-in.

Welcome to the Falcons, Joseph.

Falcons Land 3-Star RB

BG lands a big one here.

Nakai Amarchree is a RB from Haslett, MI, which is in the Lansing metro area. He has been highly recruited.  247 reports him as a 3-star, with offers from Akron, Ball State, CMU, EM, Kent and UT...also academic stalwarts like Army, Navy, Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and Yale.  Also, Minnesota.  Down the academic ladder to Marshall.  And Northern Iowa.

He scored 21 touchdowns last season. (His brother Kory is a rising sophomore with 9 D1 offers).  His dad was a RB at MSU.

He's 5'11 and 195.  He has played both ways in HS.

He was all-region and all-conference in 2021, all-state, region and conference in 2022. He also returns kicks.

Welcome to the Falcons, Nakai

Loeffler Speaks At Rotary

Here we come, football coming down the pike.

The Sentinel covered Scot Loeffler speaking at the local Rotary meeting....it's a good read about how fast college football has changed.

One (or one and a half) pieces of news.

On the recruiting front, Loeffler talked about the fact that when you take portal guys in, it reduces your high school players.  Which makes sense.  He points out that we only took 13 high school players this year due to needing guys out of the portal.

The news part is that he is planning to get more high school players this year.  Here he says:

“This year, we’re having a huge high school year just because we think we have depth at a lot of positions, and obviously that will change predicated on people leaving but right now we’re taking a lot more high school kids and are back to our formula this year."

There's the news of the high school players...and the half-bit of news that "we have depth at a lot of positions."

Which remains to be seen.  I hope it's true.

I have us with 12 HS commits, possibly not all for scholarships.

  • 2 WRs
  • 4 DBs
  • 3 OL
  • 1 LB
  • 1 TE
  • 1 RB

Despite his extension, Loeffler remains on the hottest of seats, in my opinion. We have shown we will buy Huger out and I think there's no doubt we would buy Loeffler out for one year.  Further, the hiring of Simon and Chmiel I believe only puts more pressure on Loeffler, because those both look like home run hires and the fan base will be itching for the AD to use the same magic on football.

I have said all along that the best thing for the program is for Loeffler to succeed.  In all fairness, he has hung his hat on trusting the process, and the process said this was the year.  It will not be easy.  A 7-5/6-2 would be a high end.  6-6/5-3 is what we had last year.

More preview stuff later.  BG was picked 4th in the East and OU appears to be really set up this year. Getting to average was hard.  But going from average to championship may be even tougher.

A team emerges like this every year, it seems.  Let's hope it's us.

BG gets commits from 2 OL

BG has two more commits, both of them playing on the offensive line, one area where BG has struggled for years to have sufficient quality and depth.

Aqil Meredith-Smith is a 6'3" and 280 pound lineman who played both ways at Moore Catholic in Staten Island, NY.  He had three FCS offers or so.  Remember, he is just heading into his senior year. He came to a camp at BG before signing.  His little graphic (above) says OL.

The other is local boy Dillon Robinson, from Anthony Wayne.  He is 6'4" and 270.

Here's his twitter profile, so if you like OLs with a mean streak, here you go.  He is listed as inside offensive line on 247, where he has two stars and offers from CMU and Temple.

Here's the Jared Luginbill write up....

He will be the third General to come to BG, joining Bryce Boyer, here now, and Winn Sharp, who is also in this recruiting class.  The Generals have made the playoffs 7 straight seasons.

Welcome to the Falcons, Aqil and Dillon.

Football Nabs DB Verbal

BG has another verbal, this one a young man named Elijah Parker, a Safety from Roseville, MI.  Roseville is just inland from St. Clair Shores. According to 247, he's 6'3" and 207 pounds, with offers from CMU, Marshall, The Real Miami, and WMU, along with Ferris, Tiffin and Wayne State.

Welcome to the Falcons, Elijah!

Football Nabs RB Verbal

Mar'Kel Porter has committed to BG.  He's a RB, 6'1" and 220, from Lancaster, Texas.  Lancaster is in the southern part of the DFW Metroplex.

Mar'Kel is a '24 player who had offers from Grambling, Texas State and Toledo, according to 247.  There is mention elsewhere of a Purdue offer.

Porter had 24 carries as a junior at 5.5 yards per carry and 3 TDs.  Lancaster's top 2 RBs last year both went P5 (Nebraska and Arizona State) so he didn't have much chance to shine.

That's big for a back.  The only comparable back on our current roster to that is Jaison Patterson.  He is reported to run a 4.5.

Welcome to the Falcons, Mar'Kel.

Football Adds OT Verbal

The summer recruiting season continues to yield commits to the BG Football program.  Today's name is Alex Harris, an OT from James Ford Rhodes HS in Cleveland, OH.  He is listed as 6'4" and 295.

Usually not much to go on with linemen.  Key point here is that he had offers from Boston College, Buffalo, Miami, Marshall, Ball State, Kent, Toledo and Akron. So, clearly plenty of people can see him playing at this level.

Welcome to the Falcons, Alex.
