Sweet Victory #7: The Special Teams
Quick one here...we'll weigh in more on the special teams in another day or so. In general, though, BG had a very solid special teams game. The special teams helped set the tone for the game by nearly blocking the first OU punt, and then forcing the punter to pull the ball down on the second punt (or get it blocked...or it was a fake but I didn't see it that way) which resulted in a TO and a quick TD for BG.
Note: You couldn't blame the OU punted for having PTSD seeing the Falcons. In last year's game he was blocked twice and mishandled two snaps.
Kickoff coverage was so-so,with OU averaging a start on the 29. OU only kicked off once, so there's not much to see there. Tate made all 7 xps and tried no FGs. Burbrink fair caught almost all of OU's punts, which is just fine with me.
Finally, Brian Schmiedebusch had a nice game to close out his Doyt career. He put two inside the 20, averaged 43 yards a kick and 44 yards net. A nice day for him, too.
So, one big special teams play that set the tone for a shock-and-awe start and then solid play from there on in.
