Blog Swap With Let's Go Rockets....
In a world riven with conflict, with burning embassies, where children know what RPG stands for in a nation that is divided and contentious....in the world, Let's Go Rockets and FalconBlog are reaching our hands across the razor wire and the broken glass in full view of the guard towers and civilly answering questions about our programs.
Below are their answers to my questions about the Rocket program. I answered some for them, and I will link them here as well.
Don't get me wrong. Beating Toledo makes my year. Honestly, it is not normal, but nothing makes me feel better. And the converse is true.
They don't do a bad job with their blog though.
Go Falcons. Beat Toledo.
1) Your team has started off a bold experiment with the youngest head coach in college football. Obviously recruiting takes time to evaluate, but what has been your impression of the first two games? Does the team seem disciplined and well-prepared?
Matt Campbell is the youngest head coach in college football, but he’s not new to the coaching game. He has been in a coaching position of some kind since 2004 and was a graduate assistant in 2003. He has been coaching at Toledo since 2009 so the players already know him and respect him. As an offensive coordinator last year, the Rockets finished 8th in the nation in points per game. While being a head coach has it’s unique challenges, Campbell’s familiarity with the players, schemes and recruiting has helped ease the transition.
2) For week one you switched QBs off (even resorting to a coin flip) and Owens played all the snaps against Wyoming. Are you more comfortable with one QB or did you like the change of pace the split QBs gave you?
Though both QBs have unique strengths, we are more comfortable with Owens behind center. The dual QB system worked last year for the most part, but it seems with some personnel changes in the offseason, this team is playing better with Owens taking the snaps. Establishing a solid rhythm is tough when switching QBs every other series, and it seems this team has evolved to a point where we need one consistent signal caller..
3) Your defense has given up a bunch of yards in the first two games. Both games were a long way from home against pretty good offenses. How do your project the UT defense performing once MAC play begins.
We are hoping that the defense can tighten up once the MAC portion of the schedule gets underway but, so far, it has been a “bend don’t break” style of defense. It’s not out of the realm of possibilities that the Rockets end up in offensive shootouts again with a few MAC schools like we saw last year against NIU and WMU.
