International Centre for Special Teams Research....Florida
Another years has passed, Fall has arrived, and the International Centre for Specials Teams Research is open for business again, starting a fourth year of questionable and probably useless "analysis" of the play of special teams.
It was clear to the naked eye that Saturday was not a great day for Bowling Green's special teams. How "not great" becomes apparent on further analysis.
The basic idea here is that it isn't the small yardage differences that you are really worried about. If you typically have 35 net yards on a punt, you don't really care if it is 31 or 39. What matters is when it is 20 or 50, or when a game changing play (touchdown, turnover, block) occurs.
On that idea, I founded the International Centre for Special Teams Research. I score each play....most plays will be worth no points, meaning that what occurred was in the neighborhood of what should be expected. Plays above that get positive points, plays below that negative. Total scoring explanation is here.
The only change has been that a kickoff return must get to the 25 to be neutral. Anything short is -1. Touchbacks remain a +1 for the kicking team and neutral for the receiving team.
Against the Gators BG ended up -4, which is tied for their third worst performance of the Clawson era. (The worst were Kent 2011 and Temple 2010). It is even a little harder to swallow because BG converted a fake punt, which is a +3 play, so we must have had plenty of negative plays.
And we did.

Not a pretty picture. It is usual for Schmiedebusch to have 3 negative plays, though the first one was on a big return. The return game generated a couple plays for the Gators and of course those missed FGs hurt. The fumble (a lost possession) negates the fake punt (a gained possession).
FWIW, Florida was +7, which is pretty good.

Florida Benchmark Report
So, our benchmarks are back. I use the benchmarks to examine how our team did against a specific standard, which is the 2011 MAC average for each category, conference games only. I recognize that it is tough when you mix a Florida into all this, but this is what we do. Where it says "adjusted" that means I have moved sack yardage from the rushing statistics to the passing statistics.
So, what do we see here?
For the offense:
You see the artifacts of playing a smart game, one where Coach says that BG just wanted to be in the game in the 4th quarter. You have low rates of negatives plays but also low completion percentages and yardage totals.
You also see that BG actually gained slightly more yards per play running than passing.
BG was able to use some 4th down conversions to get its percentage near a normal number.
BG's yards per points was awful. This is a measure of efficiency. When you move the ball and don't score points, that is a killer. (aka Knife to the Gut.) This is one that obviously would hit BG. The Falcons gained 23 yards for every point they scored, as opposed to the MAC average which is 14.
For the defense:
Florida ran the ball nearly 2/3 of the time, and had an average over 5 yards per carry when you take out the sack.
Florida had a decent passing game against us. They had a good completion percentage and slightly below average yardage numbers. That was buffeted by one big play.
Strong play on 3/4 down really helped the Falcons.
Neither team was very good in the red zone.

A couple of random notes:
2 true freshman played for BG Saturday. Coy Brown III and Will Watson.
Also, based on the game boxscore, BG did play two guys I was not familiar with who were not in recruiting announcements.
The first is Victor Osborne who was noted as a walk on earlier this year. He is a R-SO. He's a d-back from....Florida.
The second is Trenton Greene, a LB who is a R-FR. He's from....Florida.

Dave Wottle Day
It was forty years ago today...
that what I believe to be the greatest moment in Falcon sports history occurred. The location was Munich and the event was the 800M final. And, improbable though it was, a Falcon, Dave Wottle, trailed through most of the race, unleashed a fearsome kick and won the Gold Medal in incredibly dramatic fashion.
It is the only Falcon with a gold medal in an individual event.
I remember some of this. I was a young boy at the time, but I remember going to the parade they held for him in Bowling Green and getting his autograph, which is long gone. I remember going out to the track and watching the MAC Championships, which Wottle participated in. I remember him dueling down the homestretch with Kent's Gerald Tinker in the 4x400 relay. He spoke at our school, too, not just about the race but about the tragedy with the Israeli Olympic team.
Anyway, it is a special moment in the history of the university. They have been talking about it in various forums, including the alumni magazine. He's incredibly humble about it. "Never for one day has it been a burden," he said. "It has been a blessing."
And so we take this moment, on a Sunday night, to salute Dave Wottle. Falcon. Gold Medalist.

The MAC was a lot farther into the year before it picked up a BCS win last year and had only 3 for the whole season. NIU and UT both nearly won, and if they had, the MAC would have equalled last year's total.
