Miami Rolls Over BG MBB

The Miami Redhawks came in undefeated, and they rolled over the BG in the big showdown at the Stroh.  The big battle between the offense and the defense went Miami's way overwhelmingly, and the Falcons were left with a look at what it takes to beat a team at the top of the conference.  Final 93-83.

BG came out to a 7-2 lead.  It was tied at 9, and then Miami took the lead with 12 minutes left...a lead they would not relinquish.  In fact, they were on a 16-0 run that left them up 14 with 7 to play.  It was 29-15 with 6 minutes left, and Miami went on another run, a 25-13 run to lead 54-28 at the half.  At one point, they led by 29.

This game tracked closely with the Davidson game.  BG chipped away at the lead and cut it to 9 with 3:35 left.  They got a turnover and had the ball, and even got a good shot off, missed, had the rebound, but threw it away.

Miami came down, missed their shot, but got the board, and Suder nailed a 3 to make it 12 again, and the game was essentially over.

It is disappointing.  BG did a great job promoting the odd game over the school break and had 3,800 in the house.  Miami was just better on this day.

The key matchup was Miami's highly effective offense and BG's highly effective defense.  Miami averaged 1.23 points per possession, which is their 3rd-best game of the season. It was pretty one-sided. They made 59% from 2FG and 48% from 3FG.  They were 22 of 24 at the line. They had 31% offensive rebounds (raw number was 8, but they didn't miss many shots).  BG did turn them over a little (21%).  That's 93 points on 76 possessions.

It was BG's worst defensive game of the season.

BG had 1.1 points per possession, exactly what they did for Davidson and the #7 offensive game of the season.   They were highly effective from 2FG, making 63% and 19 of 26 inside the restricted area. Your hope is to attack the rim and get some 3FGs, but BG was a terrible 5 of 22 from beyond the arc. Also, 16 of 23 at the line, little offensive rebounding (as expected), and 17% turnovers.  That equals out to 83 points.

Towns had 24 on 7 of 11 and 2 of 4 shooting, and 6 rebounds.  Campbell had 16, on 7 of 9 and 0 of 2 shooting. Wol had 14 in 16 minutes. Ruffin had 12, but 1 of 8 from 3FG, and Shackleford had 10 but -22.

BG is now 1-1 in the MAC.  Their early schedule is tough.  They are @UMass on Saturday, and then turn around and go to Kent on Tuesday, and then Akron comes in on Friday night.  They're going to need to correct the issues quickly to avoid falling into a deep hole.
