When he came here, Coach Loeffler said we would recruit one HS QB a year. We have, except for last year. Nonetheless, a QB recruited out of HS has yet to start a game for the Falcons during the Loeffler years. And, notwithstanding the Loeffler-QB-guru narrative, BG's HS QBs have mostly been known for transferring.
It remains the most important position on the field. BG will have Bazelek/Orth combo this year and would expect Lucian Anderson to start next year. And then, you look at the next guy...who is or could be Carsen Melvin.
He's 6'4" and 195 pounds from Westfield, IN. Westfield is right smack dab in the middle of the state. As "fresh" as today's headlines, Joey Chesnut, the Meaty Apostate, is from Westfield. Also, serial killer Herb Baumeister is from Westfield.
For a D1 quarterback, there is a real lack of information online about Melvin. Maxpreps showed him with big numbers as a FR, DNP as a SO and playing 4 games last year.
Hard to say what really happened. Maybe he played and they didn't get the numbers in. But, let's just follow the narrative a little bit. Maybe there were injury issues that kept him off the field, but also kept him from being a recruiting target. He had one other offer, from WMU.
It is my understanding that there is way more behind this guy than you can see on the surface. Which makes sense, given the early offer and commit.
Looking forward to seeing more. Welcome to the Falcons, Carsen.
From the Indy Star:
Westfield quarterback Carsen Melvin committed to Bowling Green. The 6-4, 205-pound Melvin was a backup last season to senior Jackson Gilbert, completing 8-for-16 passing for 78 yards and rushing for 57 yards in four games. But Melvin, who also plays basketball, is a talented player who should plug into the starting role as a senior. He also had an offer from Western Michigan. As a freshman at Plainfield, Melvin completed 61.3% of his passes for 1,638 yards and 16 touchdowns and rushed for 104 yards and three TDs.
Gilbert has headed to DIII Wabash to play college ball.
played Fresh/Soph at Plainfield, then transferred to Westfield a traditional state power and played behind the coaches son Jr year. - also played guard on the basketball team. should lead Westfield oat QB this fall.
