So, the All-MAC teams are out and BG had 6 players honored, which is more than the 0-3 fans were voting for in John Wagner's twitter poll.
Joe Davidson was named first-team punter, and that's certainly deserved. He's a truly outstanding player.
Teo Redding made the second team. Frankly, this surprised me a little. He was 6th in receptions and reception yards, and I guess he gets a little bump for being on the highlight reels as often as he was and for much of the MAC season we weren't a high volume passing team. Congrats to him, he really worked to break out this year.
Jake Suder was also second-team at K. This is a great story. He had one of the best years a kicker ever had for BG. He was 18-22, with two of the misses over 50. He took some heat last year, but you have to give this young man credit, he has worked on his craft and earned his stripes.
On the third team there was Scottie Miller, who had kind of a quiet year for having 63 catches--and seemed to have some chemistry with Doege. Also, Andrew Clair, one of the best true freshmen RBs in the country and Nate Locke, who played very effectively in the middle of a beleaguered BG defense.
Honestly, for this team, that's pretty much what you can expect. There were some other guys who were effective, (Cleveland comes to mind) but you are a 2-10 team.
Marcus Childers was the FR of the year. Obviously, you'd like to think that Clair was equally qualified, but Childer is a QB and played a big role in NIU exceeding expectations. He was also a true freshman.
I think Davidson should have been the special teams player of the year, but don't object to Darius Phillips of WMU getting it. He was a big return guy and makes dramatic plays, as opposed to punting, which is boring.
I certainly endorse Jason Candle, Logan Woodside and Sutton Smith for their awards. All truly gave outstanding performances.
