So, when Coach was asked after the game what he thought, and he said the thing he was most disappointed in was penalties. That's understandable. BG was hit with 15 penalties for 130 yards, and that doesn't even tell the whole story. Three of the penalties negated big punt returns, which isn't captured in the stats, and there were two other penalties that were declined. Penalties cost BG a ton yesterday, and made everyone's job a lot tougher.
Here's the rundown on each of the penalties. A few notes:
First, as mentioned, 3 of the penalties were on punt returns. We had (in Coach's words) a "freshman" who blocked in the back twice and then they replaced him with another guy and he did it too.
We had a WR called for offensive pass interference twice.
There was a personal foul at the end of a big INT return.
UMass had only 6 first downs and 2 were on penalties.
Anyway, Coach said it was sloppy. It isn't the first time it has been an issue this year...let's hope with a week to focus on it when BG comes back on the field against EMU it will be able to remedy these mistakes.
While BG was good enough to win Saturday, that level of play will not be good enough to beat OU or Kent. Fortunately, there is a little time to sort all that out.
