Keyword: Inauspicious

Well, it doesn't count, but the Falcons played their first game today, an exhibition game against D-3 Adrian, and it can't be what they were hoping to see.  BG did win, 51-36, but trailed for much of the first half, and applied some lock down D in the second half to get the win.

The key concern is clearly on offense.  BG had a very poor performance.  BG had .84 points per possession, which would be among their lower totals for last year.  For example, BG averaged .84 points per possession against Xavier, and they were, you know, in a major conference and the NCAA tourney and all that.

BG shot only 37% and only 1-15 from 3-point range.  BG only shot 57% from the line, as well.

Luckily, BG applied some strong second half defense, holding Adrian to 21% shooting and 13 points.  Overall, Adrian made 24 turnovers.

BG did show some evidence of stepping the tempo up a little bit, but it wasn't evident on the overall scoreboard.  We also played man-to-man defense, which is different form last year, where we were in the 2-3 virtually all the time.

BG was out-rebounded 38-33 by Adrian.  Adrian had 11 offensive boards, but they missed a ton of shots too.  They only got 31% offensive rebounds, which is almost exactly what BG's average was last year.  Now, this was against a D-3 team....

A'uston Calhoun did have a good game, with 20 points, 7 boards and 4 blocks.   (That's about 40% of the team's total.)  No other player got more than 6 points.

Other notes:

Craig Sealey (Freshman) started.
Torian Oglesby (JUCO) did not play at all.

So, the first trip out of the box was something less than expected.  There's a long way to go, and we were saved by winning the game, but clearly there's a lot of work yet to be done.

Coach Orr:

"We are a work in progress."

"We have a lot of work to do."

"We have to rebound by committee"

"Our best offense is in transition"

"Our plan was" (wait for it) "to attack inside out."

"When you don't move the ball enough, you make the game hard.  We made the game hard.  It shouldn't have been this hard."
