Clawson Presser, Thin Edition

Coach Clawson held his presser Wednesday.  You can go bgsufalcons.com to watch it, but I watch it so you don't have to.

The first piece of news is that BG will have a new PAT/FG kicker.  Brian Wright will continue to punt and kickoff, which he has done effectively, but will not kick the FGs.

There is an open competition between Kyle Burkhardt and Steven Stein.  They competed on Tuesday and tied.  Both are walk-ons.  Burkhardt went to Toledo Central Catholic and is a freshman and Stein is a sophomore from Blue Ash, OH.

Coach said that Wright has been effective kicking and punting and has kicked PAT/FG in practice very well, but it has not translated to games.  It is a big burden for one guy, and he feels like it might have effected Wright.

He discussed the dismissal of Lorenzi, which he says is "brutal" for the team.  Discipline, sometimes, is not convenient.

Adrien Spencer will start in his place, and Aunre Davis is coming along in practice and will get time.

Cam Truss is not expected to play, which means we are actually down both of our CBs.

When asked about having two kickers as walk-ons, he noted it was more unusual to have two walk-ons in the d-backfield, as we do with Truss and Leacock.

Another kicking note.  He said kickers in HS kick off tees and have trouble making the transition to kicking off the ground, where he mentioned Jerry Phillips.

He talked a little bit about the 2-point call, saying that he lost no sleep over it, which is apparently the only thing he did not lose sleep on.  He said our "tight" red zone play had been effective and he really felt we were going to make it.

On the health front, Geter was going to try to practice Wednesday, Pronty practiced, Cooper is doubtful and Scott Lewis will be more available.  Truss is not expected to play.

  1. As for the PK duties and the brief mention of Phillips- why is he not in the mix to kick? Just seems odd a guy we relied upon last year isn't really in the conversation, has he regressed or not advanced since last year I wonder....

  2. I think it is interesting too. He is clearly our #4 kicker at best. Coach made reference to trouble kicking off the ground, but beyond that I don't know except they appear to have more confidence in these other guys, and there must be a reason.
