Any win in Oxford is a good win....

When you look at it historically, any time the Falcons emerge from Oxford with a victory, it is something to be savored.  When it is a 21 point victory and a second half shut out, all the better.  There will be more tomorrow, but here are some initial impressions.

  • Miami had six sacks and 3 INTs on 54 passing attempts (including sacks).  9 negative plays in 54 is 16.7%, about three times a normal rate.
  • BG finally had some success running the ball.  Miami was a poor run defense team, and they became the first team that BG was able to grind the clock out on.  Geter averaged over 4 yards a carry and Bullock 7.5.
  • Conversely, Miami was the first team unable to run against BG.  The team gained only 77 yards on the ground.
  • BG played a far from perfect game.  Miami committed 5 turnovers, and the offense simply did not capitalize.  There were two blocked kicks, a missed FG, a brutal dropped TD pass, etc, but I don't want to sound like an OSU fan, because BG still won in a walkaway.
  • The defense pitched a shutout in the second half, which was a really nice adjustment for the second week in a row.  Whatever we are saying to "challenge" them should be moved to the pre-game speech.
  • From what I could hear, things have really changed at Miami.  First, they are awful.  Dysert is a true freshmen and makes mistakes like a true Fr.  He is very susceptible to pressure and made a ton of mistakes.  Doesn't mean he won't be a good player.  This is a tough situation.
  • Freddie "only" had 10 catches, but he scored three times, including on a big reverse early in the game.  He was even more of a game changer tonight than when he gets 15 or 16 catches.
  • Sheehan was held under 200 yards.  On the other hand, he threw "only" 33 times.
  • Our early redzone stop was the first since the Boise game.  Really.  Meanwhile, BG was stopped three times in the redzone, including a disastrous, if doubtful, goal line fumble.

This team is 5-5 with a very decent shot at being bowl eligible and a shot at a bowl game, which is pretty good considering where we started.  This team is still far from perfect, but they are enjoyable to watch and growing in confidence every week.  Should be fun for the last two games.
