Sayonara .500

Say goodbye to a .500 record. We blow the first two to Houston, fall to 7 below at 62-69. Its the low point of the season, numerically if not metaphorically. Anyway, with 31 games left, we'd have to go 19-12 (roughly 60%) to get to .500. Its not going to happen. This is made worst by the impression I have that the team has quit on the fans. Houston has embarassed the Reds two nights in a row. On the other hand, they only need 8 wins (perhaps a stretch) to get to 70 wins, which is one more than last year.

Lions cut first player picked to stay

The Lions cut four guys, including Josh Lovelady, who I had expected to make the team. I had read that they liked Vic Rogers and Kelly Butler, but then what do you do about the guards. Wood, Loverne, and Joyce, but do you have a fourth. Or is Hopson a fourth guard as well as second center.

I'm all for keeping guys for the future. If we think Rogers and Butler will be able to play, we ought to hang onto them.

Finally, we cut the second of the three LBs we picked off the scrap heap. A fellow named Young is still around, but the team is still MIGHTY thin at LB, and on defense as a whole.

Lions Make Cuts

For the record, none of these guys were on my list to make the team. And, some journeyman LBs were picked up (in fact, Rodney Thomas was one of them, and he was cut ALREADY)....finally, is Olandis Gary the luckiest man on earth. We should have cut him before he had the chance to say he was injured.

The Drive for .500

For those of us who have followed the Reds this season, I think there was a common agreement that a .500 season would be a success. At one point, at 11 over .500, that looked pretty good. Right now, it doesn't look so good. So, what would have to happen.

The team is 62-67 right now, five games under. That's 129 games, with 33 left. We need 19 wins and 14 losses coming home to get to .500.

And, here's who we have left. (Looking worse, isn't it?)

Houston 6
Milwaukee 7
Pitt 6
Philly 3
Cubs 8
Atlanta 3

Let's try this scenario

Milwaukee 5-2
Pitt 4-2
Houston 3-3
Philly 2-1
Cubs 4-4
Braves 1-2

That gets you there--just. I'm guess we end up with about 78-79 wins. That's a tough closing schedule and against teams with something other than .500 to play for.

Lions Roster preditions

Here's my prediction for the 53 man Lions roster.

QB: Harrington, McMahon, Mirer
RB: Pinner, Bryson, Jones
FB: Schlessinger, Smith
WR: Rogers, Williams, Hakim, Streets, Swinton, Drummond
TE: Alexander, Fitzsimmons
T: McDougale, Backus, Butler
G: Woody, Joyce, Lovelady, Loverne
C: Raiola, Hopson

(25)

DE: Hall, Porcher, DeVries, Edwards
DT" Wilkinson, Pritchett, Rogers, Redding
OLB: Curry, Lewis, Davis, Lehman, Bailey
MLB: Holmes, Rainier
CB: Goodman, Bryant, Smith, Babers, Bly, Cash
S: Marion, Holt, Brian Walker, Bracy Walker

(25)

K: Hanson
P: Harris
LS: Banta

That's 53. If Bailey goes on IR, then they will keep an additional LB, and I predict they get him off the waiver wire, and not among Genord, Battle, or the guy from Bethune-Cookman they signed this week.

On offense, the choice really comes down, IMO, to John Owens vs. Swinton. I just think Swinton is better on special teams, and they don't need three TE's.

Lastly, the luckiest man in show business is Olandis Gary if he ends up on IR. He was about to be cut, probably out of the league, and this way he gets one year, if not two, of NFL salaries.

The offense is looking good, and I think will score a ton of points. The defense looks thin even healthy, and weaker not healthy. The secondary is much improved, but will be saddled with an anemic pass rush. Maybe Porcher can deliver on special downs. I firmly believe the Lions would cut Edwards if they had someone else.

So, you go 8-8 (not official prediction) this year, and grab a pass rusher in the draft next year. And its on to the Super Bowl...IN DETROIT!!!

Liars, liars, liars

The smear attack on John Kerry is unravelling as fast as possible. Its clear that these men hated John Kerry for speaking out against the war, and were willing to do anything to get him back. In part, this is a story written when our country was torn apart by Vietnam, which continues to play itself out again and again. And Kerry, as the first actual combat veteran in Vietnam to be a party nominee, and then an opponent of the war is a natural target.

What gets me is why would the Bush people want to talk war records. Amazing.

The Future of the Lions?

If we got a look at the future of the Lions last night, then I think its promising.Very promising. I think we all forgot how talented Rogers is. The offense last night was very exciting. Joey was accurate, Pinner had a nice catch, and Rogers ate up the Steeler secondary. At the very least, this year's team should score points and be exciting. Formal predictions later, butI am thinking.500, health-depending.

The defense needs some work, but the top CBs were out, and we do need those guys. Also, LB was hurt withBailey out, and will probably remain a weak point. The Killer has talkedabout Redding playing poorly, but I thought he had a great game last night. On the other hand,Kalimba made a play or two, but I don't think he reallyshined in what wasbilled as a chance for him to show his stuff. Could henot make the roster?

Anyway, we beat Pitt last year in the exhibition season, so it may not mean anything. But it was encouraging.

Two things. Formal 53 man call will come later this week, but Kircus will beat Anderson out.

Lastly, Joey is going to be a Pro Bowl QB in his career, and often.

Formal predictions later, butI am thinking.500, health-depending.

The defense needs some work, but the top CBswere out, and we do need those guys. Also, LB was hurt withBailey out, andwill probably remain a weak point. The Killer has talkedabout Redding playingpoorly, but I thought he had a great game last night.

The Future of The Lions

If we got a look at the future of the Lions last night, then I think its promising.Very promising. I think we all forgot how talented Rogers is. The offenselastnight was very exciting. Joey was accurate, Pinner had a nice catch, andRogers ate up the Steeler secondary. At the very least, this year'steamshould score points and be exciting. Formal predictions later, butI am thinking.500, health-depending.

The defense needs some work, but the top CBs were out, and we do need those guys. Also, LB was hurt with Bailey out, and will probably remain a weak point. The Killer has talked about Redding playing poorly, but I thought he had a great game last night. On the other hand, Kalimba made a play or two, but I don't think he really shined in what was billed as a chance for him to show his stuff. Could he not make the roster?

Anyway, we beat Pitt last year in the exhibition season, so it may not mean anything. But it was encouraging.

Two things. Formal 53 man call will come later this week, but Kircus will beat Anderson out.

Lastly, Joey is going to be a Pro Bowl QB in his career, and often.

The Future of The Lions

If we got a look at the future of the Lions last night, then I think its promising. Very promising. I think we all forgot how talented Rogers is. The offense last night was very exciting. Joey was accurate, Pinner had a nice catch, and Rogers ate up the Steeler secondary. At the very least, this year's team should score points and be exciting. Formal predictions later, but I am thinking .500, health-depending.
